The definition nobody gives you
The difference between accent lighting and general lighting is intent. It is selective by definition. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and leave the rest alone. The dark part is not an oversight. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept takes one sentence and a lot of discipline. Pick what matters and stop there. The pull is always toward adding, and holding the line is what keeps the result looking designed.

Not everything is improved by a fixture pointed at it. Anything with

The most common mistake
The failure mode is easy to describe: too many accents. One feature turns into six as the plan grows. At some point there is no dark left to contrast against, and the accents stop being accents. Restraint is the technique.The best accent plans tend to look almost underdone on paper and exactly right on the property at night, which is why they are hard to sell and easy to appreciate.
Where it sits among the other work
On most properties it is part of a larger plan. The other layers are path and bed lighting, security coverage, and the house itself. Accent lighting is what keeps the result from looking merely lit.
Dimmer than you think
Accent fixtures are usually dimmer than people expect. After dark the threshold is low, and too much reads as a floodlight. The goal is to draw attention, not to interrogate the shrubbery.
Two directions, two moods
Direction changes the whole character. Uplighting comes from below, so it reads as dramatic and slightly theatrical. Light from above reads as ordinary, which is exactly why it works so well over seating and paths.
Accent lighting is not set and forget
Landscape accents are aimed at living things that keep changing. A shrub uplit perfectly this spring will have swallowed the fixture in three years. Nothing is broken. The aim just needs a look. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.The test is unchanged: go outside at night and look at it. If a fixture is lighting mulch instead of the tree, it takes a moment to correct.
